Each year the Center sponsors a Writing Contest for students in grades 5-8 (Division I) and 9-12 (Division II). The guidelines can be found here.

Topic for 2009: How can the study of the Holocaust help me to deal with racism and prejudice in my own community?

Your entry can be fiction, nonfiction, prose, drama or poetry. We recommend esays for this year's topic, but any format will be acceptable.

DIVISIONS: Division I is for grades 5, 6, 7, and 8. Division II is for grades 9-12. Students at any greater Dayton area school, public, parochial or private, are eligible. Entries are usually submitted through a teacher, but may also be sent to us directly.

AWARDS: the first, second and third-place winners will receive an award.

GUIDELINES:

Entries must represent the independent and unassisted work of the person under whose name they are submitted. Proofreading for corrections by a parent or teacher is acceptable, but content must not come from anyone but the author.

Entries must be typed and double-spaced if possible. Handwritten entries are acceptable if neatly written and legible to the judges. Use one side of the paper only.

Entries will be judged for originality, content, and understanding of the subject.

Entries become the property of the Dayton Holocaust Resource Center, which reserves the right to publish them in part or in their entirety.

Send THREE stapled copies of each entry, but only ONE title page with the student's name and any other identifying information. Please staple each copy separately, not all together.  Attach the title page to one of the three copies.  DO NOT put any identifying information on the other two copies. Judging is anonymous. The title page MUST include: student's name, home address and telephone number and/or e-mail address; name of school, school's address and telephone number; name of teacher; and grade level of student.

NO ENTRY FORM IS NECESSARY if all the required information is on the title page.

DEADLINE: Entries must be postmarked, or dropped off at Hillel Academy, 100 East Woodbury just off North Main Street, no later than Friday, April 3, 2009.
